OUR PROJECT:
To buy two (2) eyesight spot screeners and four (4) audiometers to detect hearing and vision problems in school age children and provide community screening for the low income and disadvantaged on a regular basis.
Through The Lake Chelan Lions Club Foundation (LCLCF) a 501(c)3 nonprofit, we provide the underserved low-income residents of the Lake Chelan Valley a low-cost/no-cost solution to their hearing and eyesight problems. 100% of our clients, are near or below the poverty level.
Over the last two years of working though the Pandemic (COVID-19), the LCLCF has found it difficult to navigate through the restrictions and mandates required to work with-in the community and School districts requiring our services. The equipment we use for screening both hearing and sight is borrowed and only available from other Lions Clubs in Western Washington. The equipment is only accessible with restricted dates on a yearly basis, which constrains the use within the communities and the three school districts in Chelan, Manson and Pateros . Having our own equipment will give us the flexibility and reliability to serve the various needs within the Lake Chelan Valley Community.
The LCLCF Mission Is to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities and support those in need through humanitarian services that impact lives locally and globally. For over 25 years the LCLCF has worked with thousands of children in the Valley to identify those who are at risk for learning disabilities caused by sight and hearing difficulties. The LCLCF in conjunction with the school districts of Chelan, Manson and Pateros have screened over 16,000 students from K-5 and 7.
We have had measurable success in identifying those students who have difficulty with hearing or seeing in the classroom. Developmental delays are not uncommon in children who suffer from hearing and vision loss. Yet, even simple things, such as getting glasses or monitoring hearing loss to see if it gets worse, can significantly improve a child’s quality of life.
HOW IT BENEFITS OUR COMMUNITY
Hearing and sight healthcare services in the United States are difficult to access for at least 10% of our population. Moreover, hearing and sight healthcare services, including hearing aids, and prescription glasses are largely inaccessible even for those individuals who may have health insurance.
Part of LCLCF ‘s mission is to provide our communities with screening for eyesight and hearing deficiencies. To offer access to these services on a regular basis and provide follow-up referrals for low-cost/no-cost essential services to those with hearing and vision problems is crucial to an improved life. These screenings fill a gap in the need for the basic requirements of hearing and sight. LCLCF can significantly increase access to hearing and eyesight services to this population; services which were previously unavailable to them, and which can lead to an improved quality of life.
